AB OBJECTIVES: To identify the level of knowledge of married women about
AIDS and Sexual Transmitted Diseases, and to describe how women
communicate with their husbands about sex, risk of diseases, and their
power to negotiate over sexual matters. METHODS: Ten married women were
deeply interviewed, by female interviewers, concerning their knowledge
about AIDS, their communications with their husbands, and their sexual
practices. RESULTS: The married women know little about AIDS. They
recognize that AIDS is one of STD like syphillis. The women are still
ashamed to discuss sex related matters with their husbands. Their power
to negotiate over sexual matters are weak. However, their sexual
attitudes and practices have changed from procreation to recreation
oriented. CONCLUSIONS: Husband predominates in a husband-wife sexual
relationship and communication. The findings underscore the need for
more appropriate education messages, methods, and media concerning the
nature, and measures to prevent HIV transmission.
